The history of the Wolkenburg

That is what the Wolkenburg can experience in its glory today, thanks primarily to the great commitment of its owners, the old and venerable Cologne Men's Choir (Kölner Männergesangverein).https://www.kmgv.de/).

In search of new premises for their association, the gentlemen took over the building, which had been largely destroyed by the war, from the city of Cologne, with the stipulation that it be rebuilt in its original form. And they did just that with determination and a great sense of appreciation for this beautiful old building.

We, that is to say the Wolkenburg GmbH, were very fortunate in 1987 when we were allowed to operate a gastronomic bankthaus here as tenants.

From 2002 onwards, we saw the need to systematically renovate and bring the Wolkenburg building to the latest standards on both the inside and the outside. This involved not only the complete redesign of the rooms and the toilets, but also the comprehensive renovation of the kitchen.

Today, we are very happy with the constructive and harmonious collaboration over 32 years with the club. During this time, we were able to bring the Wolkenburg to new glory, preserve it as a historical event venue for Cologne, and make it accessible to everyone.

The Wolkenburg through the centuries

1141

Opened in the present-day Wolkenburg, immediately before the old Roman city wall, Cologne Archbishop Arnold I. founded the monastery of St. Maurice. He incorporated a monastery of Benedictine nuns into the church and brought the nuns from Rolandswerth here.

1802

During the French occupation under Napoleon, the monastery was secularized and auctioned off in 1807 to a Cologne private individual. Shortly thereafter, the building came into municipal ownership.

1829

The former monastery will once again be taken over by a monastic community. The Catholic faith community of the Alexians will open a hospital here.

1900

The Alexians leave the Wolkenburg, which by now had become too cramped, to move to the outskirts of the city in Lindenthal.

1929

The Rhineland Music School moves into the building that had been used as a art and crafts school after the Alexianer had moved out.

1942

More specifically: on May 31st of the same year, the present Wolkenburg was severely damaged in an Allied bombing raid.

1955

In the mid-1950s, the Cologne Men’s Choir took over the ruins of the city of Cologne in exchange for its similarly destroyed clubhouse, „Hof Wolkenburg.“ The KMGV rebuilt the historic part of the building from 1735, thus laying the foundation for today’s Wolkenburg.

1957

The KMGV opens the now restored house, under the name that still exists today: Wolkenburg.

1987

The Cologne restaurateur Dr. Rudolf von Borries takes over the Wolkenburg restaurant and establishes the Wolkenburg GmbH. To this day, he continues to run it successfully as an event venue.

2005-2007

All the rooms and all four toilets in the basement and upper floor are completely renovated and redesigned.

2016

As a million-dollar major project, the entire old kitchen was torn out and replaced with a professional new kitchen. Today, the kitchen is state-of-the-art, meets all requirements for the highest technical and hygienic standards, and works energy-efficiently, too.
